VEILS AND LOW CASTE FREE WOMEN

There is the occasional debate about whether or not free women of low caste would wear veils. As usual in the world of Gor, the issue is not as black and white as "yes, always" or "no, never".

Let us consider the evidence...

- It is mentioned frequently that low caste free women have the habit of drinking through their veils (in other words, they would go veiled)

- This habit is considered crude and ill-mannered in high society

"But the women would have to be veiled," said Jane.

Mrs. Rawlinson regarded her.

"It must be unpleasant to drink through a veil," said Jane.

"It shows crudeness, to be sure," said Mrs. Rawlinson, "but low-caste women, in public, commonly do so. (...)"

(Conspirators of Gor, ebook edition)

Free women, drinking, commonly lift their veil, or veils, with the left hand. Low-caste free women, if veiled, usually do the same. Sometimes, however, particularly if they are in public, they will drink through their veil, or veils.

(Fighting Slave of Gor, page 276)

- Note, however, the "IF veiled" condition about low caste free women. They are more lax about their veiling than women of high caste, both because of not being able to afford so many different veils and because less is expected of them socially

- Casual, less fastidious veiling of low caste women is sometimes called half-veiling

Veils are worn in various numbers and combinations by Gorean free women, this tending to vary by preference and caste. Many low class Gorean women own only a single veil which must do for all purposes.

(Slave Girl of Gor, page 106)

Gorean free women, at least in the high cities, almost always wear veils in public, although some women of the lower castes are occasionally careless in this particular, permitting lax arrangements, and such, especially the maidens. Too, some omit the veil altogether.

(Prize of Gor, page 221)

Gorean free women of high caste almost invariably veil themselves in public. Gorean free women of the lower castes tend to be less fastidious, or strict, in such matters. Whereas some will emulate the high-caste women, others will veil themselves more casually, or loosely, exposing more of their features. This is sometimes referred to as half-veiling.

(Conspirators of Gor, ebook edition)

- As for why a woman of low caste would want to go unveiled, a few reasons are mentioned. It may be a very hot day, or a day of hard manual work, or the woman might even be hoping to catch the eye of a slaver

"I have heard of some Gorean free women, unveiled, on the wharves," I said.

"Of low caste," she said. "And on work days, not holidays." A Gorean free woman is likely to fear the stripping of her face more than the stripping of her body.

(Smugglers of Gor, ebook edition)

I have seen some free women, of low caste, on hot days, who will eschew the veil altogether. This is, however, rare.

(Conspirators of Gor, ebook edition)

Low-caste women, in their work, not unoften do without veiling. Good-looking girls of low-caste sometimes go about unveiled deliberately, hoping that they may catch the eye of a slaver, and perhaps be sold into a high household, or come into the chains of a handsome, well to-do master.

(Mariners of Gor, ebook edition)

- However, having established that low caste women can sometimes choose not to wear a veil in situations where high caste woman would rather be seen naked than unveiled - the fact still remains that it's the safest choice to wear a veil

To be sure, even peasant women may veil themselves before strangers, and, one supposes, wisely.

(Prize of Gor, page 546)

A saying has it, bare the face, bare the woman. Another well known saying is, remove the veil of a free woman and look upon the face of a slave. So it is no wonder that the free woman is concerned with her veiling.

The Great Library of Gor - Q&A

 ------------ *** GENERAL ABOUT THE LIBRARY ***------------

Q: Who owns this place (IC and OOC)?

A: OOC, the library is owned by Tycho Celestalis and maintained by him and Elara Jupiter. IC, it is owned by Tycho of Ar, Scholarch, of the caste of Scribes.

Q: Could my sim have a recruitment/advertising poster here?

A: Yes, a poster exchange (we put up your poster and you put up ours) is possible, if your sim is a learning sim and/or specifically welcomes new participants and helps them get oriented. Please contact Tycho Celestalis.

------------ *** CONTENTS ***------------

Q: Why don't you have any material on ...?

A: Either because we haven't found any that is good enough to include in the collections, because nobody has submitted any, or because we haven't had time to edit, compile or write any from scratch yet. Please scroll down for submission guidelines if you want to contribute to the collections.

Q: Where can I get copies of the Gor books?

A: From a number of online bookstores or possibly brick and mortar antiquarian bookstores.

Q: I meant for free, on SL. Why don't you have them in the library?

A: Because it's an obvious copyright violation.

Q: I've been to some libraries that have thousands of scrolls. Why doesn't yours?

A: Because every single one of ours has actually been read and vetted. Those thousands of scrolls tend to include five duplicates of the same "adjectives for serving", copies of sim rules and IRC channel rules of places long gone, random people's RP logs and even things that have nothing whatsoever to do with Gor. Ours doesn't: everything on the shelves is there for a purpose.

------------ *** SUBMISSIONS AND LOANS ***------------

Q: I have some great information that's missing from your library. Do you accept submissions?

A: Yes, we do accept submissions of quality material, especially on topics not yet covered. Scrolls can be forwarded to Tycho Celestalis or Elara Jupiter.

There are a few reservations, though. Please don't submit material in bulk (such as lift the entire contents of someone's library and dump it on us). We also won't accept material that is slanderous towards recognisable sims or individuals, or  obviously geared towards a medium other than SL (for example, for an IRC channel).

Note also that any material submitted to the Great Library, apart from original stories and poetry, is subject to editing for language and formatting. Explanatory notes may be added and the text, if long, may be shortened.

Q: Can I take things for my own library from here?

A: Certainly.  We would only ask you to honour the following common sense guidelines:

Grabbing absolutely everything and plonking it down in your own library without as much as looking at what you got is against the idea and purpose of the Great Library. Please don't perpetuate the trend of libraries full of random junk.

If a text includes a credit to the original author in it, leave the credit in.

Some of the texts which have been written or edited specifically for this library contain notes or disclaimers, such as "[NOTE: The Great Library offers this text as a historical curiosity only]". You may replace the name of your own library in these.

Ambassador Class Outine - Tyros Raid Agreement

*****YOU ARE BEING RAIDED BY ISLAND CITY STATE OF TYROS****

Reason for raid

(Retaliation, assisting an ally with their raid, loot and or slaves)

1.    Only one moderator required if <city name> does not have one Tyros can supply one.

2.    By attaching the laws of <city name> Tyros acknowledges that the raid commander has            read them and agrees to the terms.

3.    Greens from either side will not be attacked or capped.

4.    In post or pre raid diplomatic visits ambassadors and their entourages from either side             can not be capped or killed.  Though if a guard violates the laws of the sim he maybe               detained.

5.    Tyros does not rp with female mercenaries, warriors or outlaws.  Any that come to the aid         of a city will have an automatic collar.  Tyros will scout ahead to see if any are there and         not raid, if at all possible.  Panthers and Talunas are the exception.

6.    No more than two tarns are allowed at Tyros, and you must rp the tarns being loaded                and removed from the ships.  Tyros is 400 passangs at sea too far for a time to fly.

7.    Forces attacking tyros can number no more than +2 to the ratio of men in Tyros.

8.    Read the rules of engagement for Tyros for more detailed information.

Extra information regarding the raid to be filled in by the raid commander or first sword.

Signature and seal (if available) of the raid commander.

Ambassador Class Outine - Example of a Tyros War Agreement

Let it now be known that the two cities of Tyros and <city at war name> are now in open warfare between one another.  The reasons for this conflict is <conflict details>

The gates of Tyros and the bridge are to be closed and raised at all times. Strangers, if they sneak by, are allowed into the city, but gate and bridge must be responsibility manned.

The warriors of Tyros, and all physicians, need to be at the walls at ALL times, so as to defend and assist.

(This is planned RP. We WILL resolve this issue responsibly through good roleplay. Since it is planned, BE COURTEOUS. Rules and terms of the fight are as follows:

1. No female outlaws or mercenaries in either <city at war name> or Tyros for this war.

2. Ratio law is another reminder for both parties, in assuring a better battle and a more in depth RP. The rule is marked as +3 on all men.

3. Capturing of citizens for ransom and for hostage is allowed during this war on both sides.

4. And like every good Role play, lets avoid any OOC bantering and bickering in open. We should try and keep this clean and let the RP continue and so on.

5. One raid every six hours. That gives time to recover, role play, and get ourselves prepared for counter attacks and retribution.

6. All captures are to be role played properly including raping, killing, or severe mutilation and beatings (as in ripping apart a man’s chest cavity while keeping him alive).

7.  Sim laws are in affect for both sides.  Observe the sim laws.  If there is a conflict between what a sim will allow and the war agreement make a note of it in the additional provisions.

8.  this is the most important rule.  HAVE FUN.

THIS MEANS:

1. IIf you are female outlaw or mercenary do not come to this war on either side.  if you are a female fighter do not come to this war on either side.

2. We may not attack with more then three total men they have. They may not attack with more then there total men we have.

3. Females, are also a target for capture and hostage during this war on both sides

4. There will be no drama. Have a problem? Get a moderator and administrator.

5. To ensure there aren't constant raids, and to allow everyone in different timezones to participate, we only allow raids once every six hours. This means that we attack once in every six, they attack once in every six.

6. No rape. No killing. No severe torture / mutilation without apporpriate roleplay and with the consent of the individuals involved. Meaning if their profile does not allow it do not do it

Additional Provisions agreed upon by both sides.

Let's roleplay this right this is an RP war and it is encouraged for both sides to have fun.  If we play this well all will have fun.  be well and be safe.  NO OOC DRAMA any issues please contact a moderator or administrator

Gorean Ambassador

To be a Gorean Ambassador means to be a highly specialized and trusted representative of a city, primarily from the Scribe Caste, tasked with managing its relationships with other cities and regions on Gor. It's a role that requires a unique blend of intellect, diplomacy, and unwavering loyalty.

Here's what it generally entails:

  • Diplomatic Representative: You are the official voice and face of your Home Stone in foreign lands. Your words are taken as those of your Ubar and City Council.

  • Negotiator and Mediator: Your primary tools are words and reason, not weapons. You negotiate treaties, mediate conflicts, arrange trade agreements, and even bargain for the release of captured citizens. The goal is always to achieve your city's aims without resorting to costly warfare.

  • Expert in Law and Custom: You must possess extensive knowledge of the laws, customs, and political nuances of various Gorean cities and castes. A misstep in etiquette or a misunderstanding of local law could have severe diplomatic consequences.

  • Information Gatherer: While abroad, you constantly observe and report on events, military strengths, economic conditions, and political shifts in other cities back to your own High Scribe and Council.

  • Bearer of Immunity: You are protected by diplomatic immunity, signified by a gold slash on your headgear. This allows you to travel and conduct business without interference within most cities, even hostile ones, as long as you adhere to local laws.

  • Pillar of the Scribe Caste: Your role highlights the Scribe Caste's importance not just within a city's walls but in its external survival and prosperity. You are a testament to the idea that intellect and strategic communication are as vital as military might.

  • Challenges: The role is dangerous, involving frequent travel through perilous lands. You must navigate a society where slavery is common and power dynamics are constantly shifting, all while maintaining absolute loyalty to your Home Stone.

In essence, a Gorean Ambassador is a crucial bridge between cities, using their wit and knowledge to foster peace and secure advantage in a world where conflict is always a breath away.
