Out of the Slave Wars grew much of the merchant law pertaining to slaves.

ENSLAVEMENT OF FREE WOMEN WITH NO HOME STONE IS PERMITTED
- this puts all women from Earth within general permission of enslavement
"You understand further, of course," he said, "that under Gorean Merchant law, which is the only law commonly acknowledged binding between cities, that you stand under separate permissions of enslavement. (...) You are an Earth girl and thus stand within a general permission of enslavement, fair beauty quarry to any Gorean male whatsoever." Earth had no Home Stones. No legalities, thus, were contravened in capturing them and making of them abject slave girls. "The first to capture you, owns you," he said.

SLAVES MUST BE CLEARLY MARKED AS SLAVES
- the brand is the usual method for this, but a collar, which may be engraved, can also be added
It is natural that not every property should be marked identically. But it is recommended that each property be marked. That is prescribed in Merchant Law.

"Some fellows do not brand their slaves," I said.
"That is stupid!" she said.
"It is also contrary to the laws of most cities," I said, "and to merchant law, as well."
(Vagabonds of Gor)
The collar may be vieved as a simple contrivance, a device prescribed by Merchant Law, identifying a slave and, if the collar is engraved, often her master.

ILLEGAL TO SELL A SLAVE WITH DYED HAIR
- law prescribes redress if such a slave has been bought
The reservations about hair coloring are particularly acute in commercial situations. One would not wish to buy a girl thinking she was auburn, a rare and muchly prized hair color on Gor, for example, and then discover later that she was, say, blond. Against such fraud, needless to say, the law provides redress.
