"Disease prevention is an area where Gorean medicine far surpasses Earth medicine. Disease is almost unknown on Gor except for a very few horrible diseases such as Dar-kosis and the Bazi plague."
(The Luther Scrolls, #16)
Bazi plague
A deadly, rapidly spreading disease with no known cure; its symptoms include pustules which appear all over the body, and a yellowing of the whites of the eyes. Also called pox, it is believed to be transmitted by lice. It can nearly wipe out an entire city and cause social and economic disruption for years to come. Survivors of the pox convey an immunity to their offspring. Slaves diagnosed with pox are usually killed as a method of containing the disease.
The external symptoms of the Bazi plague can be faked with a combination of two drugs, sajel and gieron, which produce the yellowed eyes and the strong itch and pustules.

Dar-Kosis
(lit. "holy disease"): an incurable, wasting disease akin to the Earth disease of leprosy. Also known as the "Sacred Affliction", so named because the Initiates believe it is a punishment from the Priest-Kings and the disease and the sufferers are holy. The Initiates do not permit Dar-Kosis to be eliminated from Gor and have taken measures against those who have tried to create a cure.
The disease is highly contagious, and those who suffer from it are required to wear yellow robes and constantly sound a wooden clacker to warn of their approach. By law, the Afflicted, as they are called, are considered dead once they have contracted the disease.
